Prof. George Psacharopoulos "Sixty years of returns to education: Where do we stand?"

His talk will begin with a brief history of the economics of education and how the field developed and generated so many Nobel Prizes: from Solow to Schultz, Becker, Mincer, Lucas and Heckman. He will address why the rate of return to investment in education has become a key theoretical concept and the subject of voluminous empirical research. Basic human capital theory, estimation methodology, highlights of empirical findings, and uses and misuses of the rate of return in policy formulation will be covered along with examples of countries at different levels of development. Psacharopoulos will explain the relevance to the current formulation of the United Nations Post-2015 Millennium Development.

The event will be held in English only.

Participants may also attend a follow-up presentation of two new studies exploring returns to education in the Czech Republic and EU countries, followed by a reception. Capacity is limited so please reserve your seat in advance.

Over the course of his career, George Psacharopoulos has made a deep impact on the way education is viewed in relation to economics and developing nations. In 2003, the Economics of Education Review dedicated an entire issue in his honor and recognizing the significance of his academic endeavors. Psacharopoulous is a prolific writer, with over 500 publications, translated into more than 12 languages.
